Most families drive north between late May and early September. That window gives you long days, open campgrounds, and the most services along the road. The Alaska Highway is open all year, but winter is a different trip.
Late May and June
Long daylight, fewer crowds early on, and some places still opening for the season. Snow can linger at higher passes. Call ahead to campgrounds.
July and August
Peak season. Everything is open, and so is road construction. Expect gravel breaks and pilot car waits. Wildfire smoke and closures can happen in summer, so check road reports every morning.
September
Fall color and fewer people. Services start closing after Labor Day and nights get cold. Snow is possible late in the month at elevation.
October to April
Snowbirds, military moves and locals still drive it, but you need winter tires, cold weather gear and real winter driving experience. Many seasonal stops are closed.
