The Alaska Marine Highway System runs state ferries along the Inside Passage. You can take your car or RV on board from Bellingham, Washington, to towns in Southeast Alaska like Ketchikan, Juneau and Haines or Skagway, then drive the rest of the way north through Canada.
Why families pick it
It cuts thousands of highway miles off a round trip, and the kids get a few days of whales and glaciers instead of a car seat. Many people drive one way and ferry the other.
What to know
- Vehicle space sells out for summer. Book early.
- Cabins are limited. Some people camp on deck.
- Schedules change and sailings get canceled. Always confirm on the official site.
- From Haines or Skagway you still cross into Canada before reaching the rest of Alaska, so bring passports.
A quick honest note: we have always driven, and I have never taken the ferry myself. Check the official site for current fares and schedules.
